The Uyuni Salt Flats are one of the icons among sightseeing in Bolivia. Usually in a three-day-tour you will cross the flats and explore the national park of Eduardo Avaroa.
You won’t stop wondering during this program. From Uyuni we passed the cemetery of trains which is the first stop to let your fantasy fly and get creative with your camera.
Most drivers cross the salt sea by sense of proportion and experience, there is nothing but blazing white and shimmering mountains that appear like a dancing fatamorgana on the far horizon. We seemed to fly and crossed the entire sea within one day. In an altitude of almost 4,000 Meters dry air and the burning sun can be your toughest enemies. Temperatures drop rapidly to zero or beyond in the night.
The national park appears sparsely and inhospitable. The colored lagunes stem from depositions of minerals which makes the water toxic. Nevertheless you will spot flamengos and small carnivore that obviously adapted to these conditions. Snow-capped mountains tower high up into the blue sky, are witnesses of hyperactive tectonic activity in primeval times. The wind has shaped some truly bizarre rock formations named “tree of stone” or “Desert of Salvador Dali”.
Dusty, tanned by the unvorgiving sun and exhausted from the long off-road ride we arrived a youth hostel in the middle of nowhere for our second night. Even in the next morning we were longing for some warmth.
So it is the third day’s morning when you will have the opportunity to take a bath in a natural thermal pool.
Then you continue to visit an active geyser field walking through sticky, sulphuric air. As soon as the sun is out shining on these monsters they will start to build immense pressure and eventually to explode through holes pushing out steam with deafening noise. If you get close enough and listen close you will notice the bubbling that composes the overall sound of this opera.
Through the desert on dirt roads you will get back to Uyuni. You will probably leave this town as fast as you can, longing for region where scarcity of drinking water is no problem. Your memories will last forever. This is ride is worth doing if you love bizarre places and if you are looking to push your creativity.
