In the course of a 4 day-package in the Cuyabeno National Park in the Ecuadorian amazon rainforest we visited a shaman. How do they learn? I remember how he told us that spiritual leaders of almost all indigenous shamans utilize the advantages of the civilized world and travel for a long time to collect ideas and to gain knowledge in natural medicine.
We sat in the wooden house on the banks of a river in the middle of the rainforest we became witnesses of a sample ceremony. Also, one of the group members had some back-problems and he tried to heal them. It was a great experience and I never expected to be an indigenous shaman so open-minded about the civilized world. Of course indigenous peoples in this area have frequent contact and life a hybrid life between advantages and disadvantages of both traditions and influences from the westernized world, but still his openness truly inspired me and I hope this picture may transport some emotions I had during the visit.
